Working with measurement Flashcards
(15 cards)
What does SI stand for and what is it?
An acronym for International System of Units. Based on the metric system, is consists of seven base units to describe physical quantities that are relevant to scientific measurement,
Why are the SI units important?
They provide a globally standardized system of measurement, and reduce misunderstandings between international communication and potential scientific/engineering accidents.
Why are there only seven base units?
Kg unit
Stands for kilogram, measures mass
cd unit
Stands for candela, measures the visual intensity of light sources
K unit
Stands for kelvin, measures temperature
m unit
Stands for meter, measures length
s unit
Stands for second, measures time.
A unit
Stands for ampere, measures electric current, specifically the amount of electric charge in motion per unit time
mol unit
Stands for mole, measures amount of substance
What is a derived unit?
What are unit prefixes and what do they do?
What is scientific notation?
What is the difference between accuracy and precision?
Accuracy is the closeness of a measurement to the correct or accepted value of the quantity measured.
Precision is the closeness of a set of measurements of the same quantity made in the same way.
What are significant figures?
They are all the digits in a number known with certainty, plus the first uncertain or estimated digit.why a
