Workshop 2 Spinal Cord and Pain Pathways Flashcards
(35 cards)
Meaning of Tract:
bundle of axons that follow the same course and the carry the same type of information
Fasciculus=
Tract
Meaning of Pathway:
route taken by tracts as they transmit information from one region of the NS to another
Funiculus meaning
bundle of the nerve fibres
Meaning of Soma topically:
neurons enter the spinal cord at a lower level are positioned more medially within the spinal cord.
Neurons that are higher level of the spinal cord are positioned more laterally within the spinal cord.
Flexors=dorsal
Extensors=ventral
Define Dorsal Column
Gracile/Cuneate Fasciculi
Dorsal Column do fibres from the upper limbs travel?
Cuneate Fasciculus: Conscious proprioception, fine touch and vibration
Dorsal Column do fibres from the lower limb travel?
Gracile Fasciculus: Conscious Proioception, fine touch and pressure and vibration
DCML what way?
ascending
DCML is is sensory or motor
sensory
what info does the DCML carry?
fine touch and conscious proprioception sensation
Meissner’s Corpuscles:
sensitive to fine touch
Pacinian Corpuscles:
sensitive to deep pressure
Ruffini:
sensitive to skin stretch
Merkel:
sensitive light touch
Difference b/w Nucleus/Ganglion
Nucleus CNS, ganglion in the PNS
Spinothalamic Tract what kind of pathway?
Sensory, Ascending
Type of Information is carried Spinothalamic tract?
pain, temperature and crude touch sustained pressure
Define Anterolateral and Ventrolateral System
Spinothalamic tract-anterolateral-ventrolateral system. Anterolateral system is the pathway via which pain signals are carried to the sensory cortex
Type of info Lateral Spinothalamic
pain/temp
Type of info Anterior Spinothalamic
Crude touch pressure
Lissauer’s tract
Crude touch and pressure-related axons ascend or descend 1-2 spinal levels
Spinothalamic tract neurons enter the spinal cords via Lissaeur’s fasciculus and ascending descending 1-2 spinal levels before synapsing with a neuro in the dorsal horn of the grey matter.
2nd Neuron the decussates and ascends via the spinothalamic fasciculus.
What is the Substania Gelatinosa and Nucleus proprius?
1st Synapse in the spinothalamic tract
Anterior White Commisure?
Site of decussation of the 2nd order neurons in the spinothalamic tract
