Militarism: Countries were building up big armies and weapons. Everyone was getting ready to fight.

The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was by Gavrilo Princip, a Serbian teenager who wanted Bosnia free from Austria-Hungary, this led Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia, and because of alliances, this sparked the start of World War 1.
Who was on the Triple Entente?
Britain, France, and Russia.
Who was on the Triple Alliance?
Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. Italy switched sides in the war and joined the Allied Powers in 1915.

What was the Schlieffen Plan?
The Schlieffen Plan was Germany’s idea to quickly beat France by going through Belgium. But Belgium fought back, Britain joined the war, and the plan failed, making the war last longer.
Who was Robert Bordon?
Robert Borden was the Prime Minister of Canada during World War 1. He helped Canada support the war by sending soldiers and making important decisions
What is Conscription?
Conscription was forcing people to join the army and fight in a war because they needed more soldiers.
What was the War Measures Act?
A law in Canada that gave the government powers during war and emergencies. It let the government control things like people’s movements, and limit freedoms to keep the country safe during World War 1.
What was Enemy Aliens’ & Internment camps?
Enemy Aliens is someone that immigrants to another country, that lives there for a long time but when there is war with their previous country - they cannot be trusted and are sent to camps. Example A person wanting to leave Afghanistan to stay in Canada, but they have a war with each other so Canada thinks the person that is living in their country is a spy since their were born there. So The governments watched them closely in the camps.
What were Victory Bonds?
Victory Bonds are the goverment trying to raise money for the war.
What happened in Vimy Ridge?
Vimy Ridge was an important battle in World War 1 where Canadian soldiers won. It happened in 1917 in France. Canadian soldiers were fighting against German soldiers and the Canadian soldiers worked together to win.
What Happened in Ypres?
Ypres is a town in Belgium were in 1915 The Germans used poison gas for the first time in history. The gas caused many Canadian soldiers to choke and die. The battle lasted several weeks.
What happened in Battle of the Somme?
The Battle of the Somme happened in 1916 in France. The Allies wanted to break through the German lines. On the first day 60,000 British soldiers were killed. Canadian soldiers also fought in this battle, but suffered heavy losses. The battle lasted for more than four months. In the end, only a small amount of land was gained. Over one million soldiers were killed and hurt.
What is the Trench Warfare?
Trench warfare was a way of fighting in World War 1.
Soldiers dug long, deep holes in the ground called trenches.
They stayed in these trenches for protection from enemy fire.
Life in the trenches was very hard and dirty.
Soldiers faced cold, mud, rats, and sickness. Many soldiers died trying to cross the land between trenches, called “no man’s land.
What is Shell Shock?
Shell shock is a mental illness that many soldiers got during World War 1. It was caused by the stress of loud explosions, constant fear, and seeing people die.
What is the Halifax Explosion?
The Halifax Explosion happened on December 6, 1917, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. A French ship carrying explosives crashed into another ship. The explosion was the largest blast at that time. It destroyed a big part of the city. About 2,000 people died and thousands more were hurt. Homes, buildings, and streets were blown apart. The Halifax Explosion was one of the worst disasters in Canadian history.
