Q

explain why the velocity of the satellite in circular orbit changes as it orbits the earth (3)

A

the force of gravity causes the satellite to accelerate towards the earth/the satellite is constantly accelerating
the acceleration causes a change in direction
velocity changes because direction changes

3
Q

explain why refraction happens at the boundary between the deep water and shallower water

A

velocity/speed is slower in shallow water
so edge of wave front entering shallow water slows down
but the part of the wave front in deeper water continues at a higher speed
so one part of the wave front changes speed before other parts of the wave front

Q

why does the coil in an electric motor rotate continuously when current flows through the coil

A

the current creates a magnetic field
the magnetic fields interact to create a pair of forces acting in opposite directions which causes the coil to rotate
every half revolution, the two halves of the commutator swap from one carbon brush to the other
the commutator reverses the current/keeps the forces in the same direction, so the coil rotates in the same direction

Q

how does a moving coil loudspeaker produce a sound wave

A

alternating current creates a magnetic field around the coil
which interacts with the permanent magnet’s magnetic field
producing a resultant force on the coil, causing the coil/cone to move
when the direction of the current reverses, the direction of the force reverses, producing a sound wave

Q

explain how fleming’s left hand rule can be used to predict the direction in which the copper rod will move (5)

A

!hold thumb, first finger and second finger of the left hand at right angles to each other!
second finger represents….(current pointing out of the paper)
first finger represents the field (pointing downwards)
thumb points in the direction of the force (which is right)
therefore the rod moves….

Q

explain the effect of earth’s gravitational force on the motion of a satellite

A

gravitational force cuases the satellite to accelerate twoards the earth
this changes the direction of motion, but not the speed
so it changes the velocity of the satellite

Q

explain in terms of wave fronts, why refraction happens at the boundary between air and glass

A

different parts of the wavefront enter the glass at different times
the velocity/speed is less in glass
so one part of the wave fronts changes speed before other parts

Q

why is a direct current induced in the coil of a dynamo

A

the coil rotates, so it cuts magnetic field lines
a potential difference is induced across the coil
there is a complete circuit, so a current is induced
becuase each half revolution, the commutator switch brushes/contacts
the direction of current/potential difference does not reverse every half rotation/ the direction of the current/pd is the same every half rotation

15
Q

why does the car have a maximum speed

A

there is a maximum forward force provided by the motor
as the speed of the car increases air resistance increases
until air resistance is equal in size to forwards force
so the car can no longer accelerate so the car travels at terminal velocity

Q

why an alternating current is induced in the coil of an alternator

A

the coil cuts magnetic field lines
a pd is induced across the coil
there is a complete circuit so a current is induced
every half turn the pd reverses direction
so every half turn the current changes direction

18
Q

why does the handle of the alternator becomes easier to turn when the alternator is disconnected from the transformer and the lamp

A

there is no induced current after disconnection
so no magnetic field produced around the coil
to oppose the movement of the coil

Q

explained braking distance increase

A

increase speed
the faster the vehicle the greater the distance in the driver’s reaction time

condition of tyres, condition of road surface, wet/icy
affect friction

condition of brakes
reduced friction if poor brakes

increase mass/weight of vehicle
increase kinetic energy

20
Q

explain possible dangers caused by a vehicle having a large deceleration when it is braking

A

brakes overheating
causes loss of control of vehicle/causes skid

21
Q

two iron rods inside solenoid. why do iron rods move apart when the switch of circuit is closed

A

rods become induced magnets
with the same polarity at each end

22
Q

why is changing two independent variables at the same time not a valid method

A

not possible to know the effect of one variable or the other

23
Q

how does the big bang theory describe the universe when it began

A

very hot and dense

24
Q

evidence that the universe began from a very small region

A

the furthest galaxies are moving the fastest
which suggests that the universe is expanding

25
peer review
detects false claims detects inaccurate data detects bias verifies new data provides a consensus of opinion
26
why propers of X-rays makes them suitable for medical imaging
pass through soft tissue absorbed by bone
27
reflector albedo value = 1.0 absorber value = 0.0 cloud = 0.6-0.9 earth = 0.3 why does the air at night at point with no cloud cool faste than air at point at point with cloud
at night more radiation is emitted from the earth than absorbed from space cloud reflects radiation at A, there is no cloud covering so a large proportion of radiation will be emitted into space
28
explain changing motion of the skydiver in terms of the forces acting on the skydiver
initally air resistance is less than weight so the skydiver accelerates acceleration causes the air resistance to increase resultant force decreases to zero so the skydiver falls at terminal velocity
29
function of microphone
to convert pressure variations in sound waves into variations in current/pd
30
advantage and disadvantage of the balloon model
ad: as the balloon expands, the dots get further apart, representing the galaxies moving apart weakness: dots are only on the surface of the balloon, galaxies are throughout the universe there is a limit to how far the balloon car expand
31
describe how you could show that a magnetic field has been produced around a wire if you have a piece of paper around it
sprinkle iron filings onto the card tapping the card will move the filings to show the magnetic field pattern
32
why can a car accelerate without changing speed
car changes direction so velocity changes acceleration is the rate of change of velocity b
33
braking distance definition
the distance travelled under the braking force
34
why atmospheric pressure decreases with increasing altitude
air molecules colliding with a surface create pressure at increasing altitude, fewer molecules above a sruface so number of collisions with a surface decreases
35
one piece of evidence that shows when a sound waves travels through the air it is the wave and not the air itself that travels
a vibrating drum skin does not move air away to create a vacuum around the drum
36
loudspeaker 6 marker
the current in the electrical circuit is varying the current passes through the coil coil experieces force reversing the current reverses the force the size of the current affects the size of the force the varying current causes the coil to vibrate the vibrating coil casues the cone to vibrate the vibrating cone causes the air molecules to move the movement of the air molecules produces the pressure variations in the air needed for a sound waves the air molecules bunch together forming compressions and spread apart forming rarefractions
37
describe how stars produce other naturally occuring elements
fusion occurs at high temps fusion produces new elements hydrogen nuclei fuse to form helium nuclei hydrogen in the core begins to run out helium nuclei fuse to make heavier elements up to iron some massive stars become supernovae creating elements heavier than iron
38
describe how the acceleration of the trolley can be calculated using the time taken and distance travelled by the trolley
divide distance travelled by time taken to give mean velocity double mean velocity to give maximum velocity divide change in velocity by time taken to give acceleration
39
how radio waves are produced at a specific frequency
produced by alternating currents so the radio waves have the same frequency as the oscillations in the current
40
explain why a driver’s reaction time affects the thinking distance of a car
distance = speed * time so longer reaction time = longer distance
41
centre of mass
the point from which weight may be considered to act the point where the mass appears to be concentrated
42
what is meant by red shift in terms of galaxies
the observed increase in wavelength of light from galaxies as galaxies move away from us
43
why is there an alternating current in the output when the transformer is connected to a circuit
a changing magnetic field around the primary coil creates magnetic field that changes direction in the iron core induces an alternating pd across the secondary coil
44
