It had also killed or permanently crippled 230,000 more French and British troops than it itself had lost. made prior to 1914 in case a war with france and russia broke out swing through belgium to the sea behind paris and cut france in half then turn army to russia to prevent 2 front war failed: russians launched surprise attacks german general took troops away from belgian from to slow french advance general molte pulled troops to fight russia belgium put more resistance than expected Great britain mobilized and sent the BEF (British Expeditionary Force) to defend belgium faster than expected

Conscription Crisis 1917
By 1916, Canada had already sent 500k soliders Borden promised an additional 500k (very unrealistic) Everyone who wanted to go had already volunteered In 1917, borden passed millitary service bill - meaning mandatory millitary service if u were between 20-35 yrs and male They didnt actually start conscripting until jan 1 1918 400k conscripted and 95% applied for exemption Exemptions were for: farmers sons, brothers of serving soldiers, religious objectors (pacifists), or other (special cases that would go to a judge) April 1 1918 - Riots in Quebec city over conscription Led to borden calling off exemptions cuz he was mad over riots Further divied english and french ppl in canada No one who was conscripted ever fought Conscription led to a further split between imperialists and nationalists
