Before War - The Long peace
No great conflicts (all continents involved) or wars in europe since the fall of Napoleon (except Prussia Franco War 1871
La Belle Epoque (The beautiful era)
Optimism, regional peace, economic prosperity and innovation
Queen Vic - Kaiser Wilhelm, Tsar Nicholas II and King george were all first cousins
Industrial rev - Sanitation, society, infrastructure
Was fragile - prosperity masked national and international jealousies, sizes of armies, economy and machinery
Imperialism - Long Term
(Simmers and festers away under the surface for years)
Country increases power by gaining control of new territories. Which can include competition for international territories (Africa), where England got the biggest share, then France. Countries dispersed continents to avoid war
Alliances - long term
Were negotiated in secret, yet were widely known. Triple Alliance - formed the basis of the Central powers - dominant alliance block - was abandoned with ottoman empire
Triple Entente - Formed despite three hating each other
Militarism
The idea that a nation should increase its military power and capabilities to protect themselves and promote interest = growing tension
(Anglo-german naval race)
Nationalism - Long term
Sense of pride and love for one’s country, and the belief that one’s culture is superior to all.
Can unite and divide
Can grow understanding and common values
Short term
(Last straw and catalyst that sparks effect)

Germany at start
Wanted to challenge Britain’s army at first, being a young country. The British were intimidated and aliened with France with informal agreements. grew from there.
