What was Harvey and Slatin’s (1976) study and their findings?
Examined whether teachers had preconceived ideas about pupils of different social classes.
- showed 96 teachers 18 photos of children from different social classes (equal in ethnicity and gender).
- teachers were asked to rate children on their performance, parental attitudes.
FINDINGS - lower class children were rated worse.
Teachers compared photos to children they had previously taught.
What was Charkin’s (1975) study and their findings?
48 uni students were asked to teach a lesson to a 10 year old boy.
- 1/3 were told he was motivated and intelligent.
- 1/3 were told he was not motivated and intelligent.
- 1/3 were told nothing.
FINDINGS - high expectancy group made more eye contact and encouraging body language.
