Y8 Synthetic Materials/Fabrics Flashcards
(13 cards)
Name some properties of polyester
Strong, hard wearing, low flammability, good elasticity, cheap, resists creasing, dries quickly, not absorbent, not biodegradable, melts as it burns (so harmful if clothes catch fire)
Name some properties of nylon
High tensile strength, good elasticity, highly resistant to wear and abrasion, long lasting, water resistant, dries quickly, lightweight, heat resistant, will melt or deform
What materials can tents be made out of?
Nylon, polyester, ripstop nylon, or natural materials like canvas and polycotton.
What are knitted fabrics?
Knitted fabrics are made by interlocking one or more yarns together using loops. The loops trap air so they insulate. They stretch more than woven fabrics. Some uses: jumpers, socks, tshirts and general knitwear.
What are woven fabrics?
Woven fabrics are made by interlacing (crossing alternately over and under) two sets of yarns – warp and weft (horizontal). Some uses: jeans, shirts, trousers, skirts, dresses.
Absorbent
A fabric that soaks up liquid.
Waterproof
A fabric that keeps water out.
Cool
A fabric that keeps us from getting too hot. It is often a natural fibre like cotton.
Breathable
Fabric that allows sweat to get out and evaporate. It lets the air get in and out.
Warm
A fabric that provides insulation.
Flammable
This is a fabric that can catch fire.
High tensile strength
Fabric that is resistant to breaking under tension or
stretching forces.
Abrasion
Damage caused by the fabric rubbing against itself or external materials.
