Q

What is inactivity?

A

People who participate in physical activity but not enough to meet the guidelines. (Lack of moderate intensity PA)This leads to increased risk of chronic lifestyles diseases.

Q

What is sedentary behavior?

A

Means to remain stationary for long periods of time and expending very low amounts of energy (TV watching). Active and inactive people engage in sedantry behavior during the day.

16
Q

What are the levels of intensity measured in METS?

A
Sedantry= below 2 mets
Low= 2-3 mets
Moderate= 3-6 mets
Vigorous= 6+ mets
17
Q

What is low intensity activity?

A

Lightest category of activity in terms of energy expenditure. (Slow walk, golf, gardening/household chores)

18
Q

What is moderate intensity activity?

A

Generally consists of sustained rhythmic movement. Should feel exertion but still able to carry out conversation comfortably. (bike riding at moderate pace, dancing, weight lifting)

19
Q

What is vigorous intensity activity?

A

Participating in physical activity at this level leads to significantly increased heart and respiratory rates. (Running, swimming, squash)

20
Q

What are the physical activity guidelines for adults?

A
  • Most days, x3 days a week of strength training

- 150-300 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity PA per week.

21
Q

What are the physical activity guidelines for teenagers?

A
  • 60 minutes per day

- x3 strength building activities per week + extra hours for benefits.

22
Q

Why is physical activity important?

A

Regular activity that meets the guidelines has several benefits that can be felt inside and out including:

  • It reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease + more
  • alleviates depression + anxiety
  • can boost mental alertness
23
Q

What are the risks of not meeting the physical activity guidelines?

A

Physical inactivity increases the risk of major health conditions such as:

  • cardiovascular disease
  • stroke
  • high blood pressure
  • type two diabetes
  • obesity
24
Q

What is METS?

A

Mets stands for metabolic equivalent. It is a measure of how much energy you are expending during an activity

25
Q

What is an enabler?

A

Factors that influence people to participate in physical activity.

26
Q

What is a barrier?

A

Factors that inhibit, or negatively influence people to participate in physical activity.

27
Q

What are the largest enabling factors in PA?

A
  • access to facilities
  • social circle, family and peers
  • time, age and gender
  • cultural background
  • educational level
  • employment status
  • geographical location
28
Q

What are socialising agents?

A
  • family
  • peers
  • school
  • media
29
Q

What are the categories of assessing physical activity and sedentary behavior?

A

Subjective and objective

30
Q

What is subjective assessment?

A
  • They are not always accurate (recall surveys)

- People can fill them out (diary, log book)

31
Q

What is objective assessment?

A
  • More accurate (pedometer or fit bit)
  • collects data
  • easily administrated to larger populations (qualitive)
