What is classification?
Sorting living things into groups based on shared features.
What is the Linnaean classification system?
A system that groups organisms based on physical features into levels
Name the levels of the Linnaean system.
Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species.
What is binomial nomenclature?
The two-part scientific name of an organism (Genus + species), e.g., Homo sapiens.
What are the six kingdoms of life?
Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protista, Eubacteria, Archaebacteria.
What is a dichotomous key?
A tool to identify organisms using yes/no questions about their traits.
What does Biotic mean?
Biotic = living things
What does Abiotic mean?
Abiotic = non-living things like temperature, light, water.
What is a niche?
The role an organism plays in its ecosystem.
What is a producer?
An organism that makes its own food (usually plants).
What is a consumer?
An organism that eats other organisms.
What is a decomposer?
An organism that breaks down dead matter.
What is a food chain?
A food chain shows what eats what — or in other words, which living things eat eachother
What is a food web?
A more complex diagram showing how food chains connect.
What is mutualism?
Both species benefit.
What is parasitism?
One benefits, the other is harmed.
What is commensalism?
One benefits, the other is not affected.
