Year 8 Physics Flashcards
(35 cards)
What is resistant measured in?
Ohms using a multimeter
What is Current measured in
Amps using an ammeter
What is potential difference measured in?
Volts using a voltmeter?
What happens if a component is broken in a series?
The entire series stops working
What happens if a component is broken in a parallel?
The other components will be able to function without a problem.
How do you calculate potential difference?
V= I x R
Volt = Current x Resistance
What is forces measured in?
Newtons
How do forces act?
They act in pairs called interaction pairs. Eg a tennis ball on a table gravity on the table going downwards.
How to know if a force is balanced?
The forces on an object are the same size but in different directions. This means they are either moving at a constant speed or they are stationary
What happens forces are unbalanced?
The object will either be in acceleration or deceleration.
<——————>
5N. 7N
This is an unbalanced forces
What is a resultant force?
Difference between two unbalanced forces
What is a contact force?
When two objects are physically touching air resistance and friction are two example
What is a non contact force?
When two objects are physically separated. ( not touching) examples are non gravitational force and magnetic forces.
What is it called when an object is floating?
Buoyant
How does the forces on a floating object work?
A floating objects weight will be less then or equal to that upthrust of the water.
What is hookes law?
An object that has a linear relationship if the force is applied to the spring is doubled, the extension will double too
What is a linear relationship?
A relationship between 2 variables. Where one variable results in the constant change of the other, when plotted on a graph it results in a constant change.
What happens if an object does not follow hookes law?
It will not have a linear relationship and therefore, will not be a straight line when placed on a graph.
What is the area where an object experiences a non contact force?
A field eg gravitational field and magnetic fields.
What is gravity?
A non contact force that acts between two objects.
What is mass?
The amount of matter within an object we measure mass in kg.
How does gravitational force work?
Pulls you back to earth when you jump. The size of the gravitational force depends on the mass of the two objects and how far apart they are.
What is weight?
Downward force that acts between two objects
What equation do you use to calculate weight?
Weight = mass(kg) x gravitational field strength (N/kg)
