Yersinia Flashcards
(17 cards)
Characteristics of yersinia
Enterobacteriaceae
Lactose negative
Growth <4C to 45C
Motile at 30C but no motile at 37C
4-10pH survival
What are the 2 groups of enterocolitica?
Biovars and serovars
What is the difference between biovars and serovars?
Biovars use substrate and serovars have LPS O-antigens
What is the most common serotype of enterocolitica?
Bioserotype 4:O3
Where can 4:O3 be found?
Pigs, salad and milk
Symptoms of enterocolitica
Diarrhoea
Mild fever
Abdominal pain
Inflammation of lymph nodes
How long do symptoms of enterocolitica last?
5-14 days
How does enterocolitica cause infection?
Penetrates intestinal walls and produces heat-stable enterotoxins, controlled by plasmid and chromosomal genes
How does enterocolitica cause inflammation of epithelial cells?
Stomach acid attach to epithelial cells of ileum
Cells multiply and spread to lymph nodes
Disseminate into deeper tissue and organs
What are the adhesins used by yersinia?
myfA (fimbrial antigen and putative adhesin)
inv invasin (outer membrane protein required for translocation)
What is the use of adhesins?
Colonisation and invasion
What is the use of pYV plasmid in yersinia?
Allows replication in lymphoid tissue
What are the enterotoxins of yersinia?
Yst A, B and C
What is the use of enterotoxins by yersinia?
Acts on guanylate cyclase and iron utilisation
When are yersinia enterotoxins expressed?
<30C
What is Y. pseudotuberculosis?
Strain of yersinia found in rodents, carrots, lettuce and chocolate milk
What does pseudotuberculosis cause?
Gastroenteritis
Lymphadenitis
Immune diseases
