A

Management of potential Zika virus exposure (periconception or pregnancy)

A
  1. Early specialist advice
  2. If exposure ≤2 weeks ago
    a. symptomatic: urine zika PCR + IgG + IgM, repeat in 2 weeks if neg
    b. asymptomatic: collect samples for testing and hold for future testing, repeat in 2 weeks
  3. If exposure 2-4 weeks ago perform tests, no need to repeat
  4. If exposure >4 weeks ago perform Ig M and IgG only
  5. Refer to MFM if anything positive

Congenital Zika Virus signs

A
  • Severe microcephaly
  • Decreased brain tissue with subcortical calcifications
  • Eye abnormalities (macular scarring, retinal focal pigmentation)
  • Hypertonia
  • Joint abnormalities (arthogryposis, talipes)
  • Other (dysphagia, seizures, other eye findings, disrupted brain development or absent brain structures)
    Long term sequale not yet defined
