1

Autonomic Nervous System

provides unconscious and involuntary control for heart, blood vessels, visceral organs, and glands
-made of Parasympathetic and sympathetic branches

2

Somatic Nervous System

provides conscious and voluntary control of skeletal muscle

3

Acetylcholine (ACh)

a primary neurotransmitter of the autonomic nervous system released by:
-all pre-ganglionic nerves
-post-ganglionic Para- nerves
-some post-ganglionic sympa- nerves (50% sweat glands)
-all somatic nerves

4

Norepinephrine (NE)

a primary neurotransmitter of the autonomic nervous system that is released by most post-ganglionic sympathetic nerves

5

Dopamine

released by some post-ganglionic sympathetic nerves (smooth muscle of renal vasculature)

6

Co-Transmitters

Packaged and released with primary NTMs into synapse.
-may elicit faster or slower responses that modulate action of primary NTM
-may play role in feedback inhibition at nerve terminals
-may function as primary transmitter in non-cholinergic/non-adrenergic nerves
-eg. purines (adenosine, ATP), peptides (Cholecystokinin, somatostatin, supstance p), and NO
