1- Design Methods And Processes Flashcards
(24 cards)
What is meant by an iterative design process ?
A design process where the designers will move back and forth through the cyclical process and will constantly evaluate what they are doing in order to improve their work and refine a design
What does the term iterative mean ?
Repetitive
What does the user centred design aim to do ?
Ucd aims to improve the users experience of using the product ( interacts with the product )
How can a product be produced to make it more successful?
- following the international usability standards , iso 13407
- designing to meet the needs , wants or values
What do iso 13407 complaint products contain ?
- takes full account of users, task performed and the relevant environment
- involve users in the design and development process
- be refined by user centred evaluation
- consider the full user experience
- be developed by a multiskilled , multi disciplinary team
What methods are used to achieve user centred design standards ?
- apply ergonomic principles
- use anthropometric data
- observe people using products
- organise focus groups to identify problems with existing products
- gain understanding of how users interact with products
- Improve user experience
How would using ergonomic data make a design user centred ?
- by ensuring that the products align with the capabilities , limitations , and needs of the users
- enhancing comfort ( shaped to reduce strain and discomfort over time )
- improving safety ( designed to reduce the risk of injury)
- increasing efficiency and performance ( minimize unnecessary motion and reduce the task time )
How may anthropometrics be used to improve a user centred design ?
- proper fit and comfort ( depth and dimensions of products )
- accessibility and reach ( how far users can reach without straining - useful for car brakes and clutches for ease of use )
How many observing people using products help create a user centred design?
- You may be able to identify usability issues (product can be developed to improve these issues )
- discovering unmet needs ( uses me adapt the product to fit their needs - highlight opportunities for design improvements )
How many organising focus groups help create a user centre design?
- Identify problems with existing products
- exploring a range of needs and expectations of the product
Examples of primary investigative techniques?
Market
What is meant by the immersive research
The process of designers putting themselves into the environment or situation that the customer or user is in for example a designer might wear a pregnancy in order to stimulate the size and weigh and restricted movement of someone who is pregnant
How many interviewing potential users be used in developing a product?
You are able to understand the once and needs with regards to new products
How can focus groups be used when developing new products?
These are panels of potential customers who represent the target market and can be used to obtain qualitative data such as their opinions about existing products order to obtain feedback on prototypes
How many market research be used in developing new products?
Examples of data that can be obtained include income level ,disposable income, age range , hobbies and interests , typical shopping habits
It can identify the needs of consumers and also explain why consumers may choose one product over another . This information can be used by designers to create more informed decisions about how they would develop products
How many analysing disassembling and evaluating existing products be used when developing new products?
The use of disassembling and evaluating existing products will enable designers to identify useful materials and components and mechanical structures as well as other features that can be adapted in a new product
How many practical testing of materials and processes be used when developing a new product
- This identifies what might be used in creating new products and how well the product works/last for usage
What are examples of primary investigation techniques
- client interviews / market research/focus group/analysing disassembling evaluating existing products/practical testing of materials and processes/immersive techniques
How can human factor such ergonomics and anthropometrics be used when developing a new product
Economic issues can be considered by observing potential customers using a product. This can identify whether the consumer has difficulties in using the product and potential improvements that can be considered.
What are secindary investigative methods ?
Investigation carried out from secondary sources
How many exploring historic and contemporary designers or design movements be used in developing new products?
These can be used to identify styling influences which may be used in this new product
How many designers use anthropic data sourced from the Internet or book to develop a new product
Anthropometric data that is relevant to an age group of the target market maybe used to create a product that is inclusive
How are designs and ideas conveyed?
Through sketching and modelling ideas
- these ideas may be annotated with critical and evaluative comments that explain how the ideas meet the specification
What is meant by the term ergonomics?
- The study of the interaction between products and humans
- how comfortable it is to use or easy the product is to use
