12. Responisble Design Flashcards
(17 cards)
How did the world commission on environment and development define sustainable development
Development which meets the needs of the current generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
What must designers consider to have a minimal environmental impact?
-to conserve materials ( nesting components to minimise waste )
- how to conserve energy during product manufacture
-How to make products that are as sustainable as environmentally friendly as possible
- Their carbon footprint including primary and secondary carbon footprint
- Product miles( the total lifetime distance that a product has been transported from its place of production to the place of use by consumer)
What are the three strands of sustainable development?
Economical social and environmental
What must be considered in terms of economic when it comes to developing a sustainable product?
- The material choice (the cost, use of finite resources and obtaining the original source )
- Processing implications ( energy cost and cost associated with dealing with potential pollution )
- Manufacturing ( the cost of ensuring good working conditions for those involved in the manufacturing process )
What must be considered in terms
of social when it comes to developing a sustainable product
- Processing implications ( pollution of the impact on peoples health)
- Manufacturing ( working conditions for those involved in the manufacturing process )
Examples of changes to become more environmentally sustainable ?
- marks and Spencer ( pizza box ) had been reduced by 62 percent from their old box style pizza packaging in o shrink-wrapped plastic package
- washing detergent ( redesigned to use less plastic
What factors must designers consider that use the optimum amount of packaging to protect and preserve products and prevent waste
- lightweight packaging
- using recycled content
- making packaging recyclable
- the use of refills and concentrates
- minimal packaging material
- charging for items such as carrier bags
An example of a product that had been designed to remove waste from single use products ?
The keep cup had been designed to reduce the environmental impact caused by disposable cups ending up in landfill
- 20 standard disposable cups and lids containined enough polymer to create one keep cup
Advantages of renewable energy ?
- sustainable
- never runs out
- little to no waste - chemical pollutants ( minimal environmental impact )
- renewable energy project brings social and economical benefits through employment and use of local services
Disadvantages of renewable energy ?
- difficult to generate the large quantities of energy produced by fossil fuels generators
- often relies on weather / tides ( if supply is unreliable or inconsistent then the energy production will be unreliable )
- can not be stored in large quantities for later use
- expensive
What is meant by circular economy ?
- cradle to cradle approach rather than cradle to grave
What are the two types of nutrients ?
- biological nutrients and technical nutrients
What is meant by biological nutrients ?
Organic non toxic materials that can be composted andcan safely re enter ecosystems without harming the natural environment
- wood can naturally degrade to provide compost or nutrients upon deposition
What is meant by technical nutrients ?
- man made materials including polymers ans alloys designed to be used repetitively at the same inital high quality with minimal energy and no adverse environmental effects
A circular economy will ?
- work against the unsustainable take , make and dispose culture
- promote and drive greater resource productivity
- reduce waste
- avoid pollution
- ## reduce the use of finite sources
