10. Qualitative data analysis Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
What is thematic analysis?
A
Process of interpretation of QL data to find patterns of meaning
2
Q
Process of TA
A
- Researcher collects data using semi-structured individual/ focus group interview transcripts/ observations
- Researcher read + re-reads transcripts
- Researcher identifies codes in data in relation to question (highlighting relevant comments)
- Researcher uses codes to interpret common themes / sub themes which redefined to capture ppt overall message
- Researcher selects specific quotes to illustrate themes/ sub themes as supporting QL evidence
3
Q
What are the traits of TA
A
- Latent: focusing on underlying meaning
- Inductive: specific to broad generalisation
- Based on researcher interpretations of transcript
- Not for QN analysis
4
Q
Strengths of TA
A
+ High internal validity: rich, insightful QL data uses ppt quotes as supporting evidence for themes and sub themes identified
+ High generalisability: allows researchers to study ppt thoughts, perceptions, experiences across cultures, genders, backgrounds (takes into account individual differences)
5
Q
Weaknesses of TA
A
- Credibility: subjective interpretation as based on researcher interpretation therefore difficult establish C+E as data not objective and researcher bias could be present
- Low reliability: methodology repeated easy but unlikely will come to same themes and sub themes as interpretations are subjective and unique to individuals
