10.1 WHAT IS EXCRETION Flashcards
(20 cards)
What is the definition of excretion?
The removal of waste products made in cells of the body itself such as carbon dioxide and urea
What are the importances of excretion?
- Waste products from cells are toxic
- Build up of waste products will damage cells
Where is carbon dioxide produced?
Made in cells during cell respiration
Where is urea produced?
Made in liver
Where is water produced?
Made in cell respiration
Where are mineral ions produced?
Released after digestion of food
What are the excretory organs for carbon dioxide?
Lungs
What are the excretory organs for urea?
Kidneys, skin
What are the excretory organs for water?
Kidneys, skin
What are the excretory organs for mineral ions?
Kidneys, skin
What is carbon dioxide excreted as?
Gas in expired air
What is urea excreted as?
Urine, sweat
What is water excreted as?
Urine, sweat
What are mineral ions excreted as?
Urine, sweat
What is the process of excretion for urea in the kidney?
- Urea excreted is produced in the liver from the breakdown of excess proteins
- Urea is excreted by the kidney
- Urea is removed from the body in the form of urine
What are the effects of urea?
- Urea is very toxic
- High concentration of urea in body will damage organs and the brain and die
What is the structure of the kidney?
- Reddish brown organ
- 10cm long
- Surrounded by a thick layer of fat
Why is urine yellow?
- Urochrome makes urine yellow
- It is a waste product produced from the breakdown of haemoglobin
What are the factors that affect urine concentration?
- Water intake
- More water intake, more diluted urine - Temperature
- Higher temperature, more water lost in sweat, more concentrated urine - Exercise
- More exercise, more water lost in sweat, more concentrated urine
What are the differences between excretion and egestion?
Excretion is the removal of waste products made in the cells of the body itself such as carbon dioxide and urea.
Egestion is the removal of undigested material, which is taken into the body as food but cannot be broken down. It is passed out of the body as feces.
