As he was pouring out [words] of this kind, a screeching blast from the North Wind struck his sail full-on, and lifted the waves to the stars. The oars were shattered; then the prow broke off, and it presented/exposed the side [of the ship] to the waves; a mountain of water followed, steep [and] in a heap. Some [of the sailors] hung on the top of the wave, for others the wave/sea, yawning open, revealed the sea-bed between the waves; the tide/water raged on the sand. Three times the South Wind hurled [ships] it had snatched up on to the hidden rocks – Italians call the rocks which are in the middle of the waves ‘altars’ – a vast reef on the surface of the sea; three times the East Wind forced [ships] from the deep on to the shallows and the Syrtes [sandbanks], a pitiful sight, and struck them onto the shoals and surrounded them with a mound of sand.
