A
  • Matthew- ‘Do not judge, or you too will be judged.’
  • how we judge others in this life will be turned against is in the next life and we will be judged with the exact level of harshness that we judged with in our lives
  • we are not fit to judge others, only God judges
  • Matthew-‘Why do you look at the speck of saw dust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in tour own eye?”
  • it is hypocritical to do this

  • Jesus tells us not to make it noticeable when we fast because God knows and no one else needs to know. We will receive our reward in Heaven, while hypocrites have already been awarded with self-satisfactions

  • Jesus says that those who publically give to the needy have ‘received heir reward in full’, so they will get no reward in heaven

  • Jesus tells us that those who pray in public have ‘received their reward in full’, but if you pray in private God ‘will reward you’.
  • we shouldn’t babble ‘for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.’ So we should say the Our Father, as those who forgive will be forgiven.

  • all the treasures you have gathered will have no meaning in the after life

  • when Jesus said the widow gave more than others he meant that she gave her all
  • the rich offered there leftovers as offerings, even though it was a lot of money, it held no meaning and was no a sacrifice. The widow gave only two coins, which was everything she owned, it was a sacrifice
  • she gave out of her poverty, while the rich gave out of their wealth

Why should we use the Sermon on the Mount as a guide?

  • because it is a teaching of Jesus that is from God and must therefore be followed
  • if Jesus says you cannot do something, the Christians should believe him
