Health Behaviour Flashcards
What are health related behaviours
Smoking, drinking, drug use, safe sex, healthy diet, exercise
Why are behaviours linked to health
Behavioural risk factors increase likelihood of disease eg smoking is linked to heart disease
What are the two theories that help understand health behaviour
Learning theories, social cognition model
What are the three types of learning theory
Classical conditioning, operant conditioning, social learning
Describe classical conditioning
Cues affect reaction, Pavlov
Cues can be environmental, emotional or in connection with drugs and alcohol
How can you use classical conditioning to change health behaviour
Avoid cues
Pair behaviour with unpleasant response (Antabuse, disulfiram)
What is operant conditioning
BF Skinner, Associate behaviour with reward or punishment. Rat in box experiment
What are some problems with operant behaviour
Most bad behaviours create positive response. Eg drinking
We are driven by short term rewards so it’s harder to maintain good habits
Limitations of conditioning theories
No account for thought process and influences from society
Social learning theory
Albert Bandura, People can learn vicariously
Boba doll experiments
Social learning theory explained
We will copy behaviour if it leads to rewards and we believe we can perform that behaviours
Social learning theory; who do we copy
People similar to us or at higher status
When is social learning theory used
In peer modelling education, celebs in health promotion campaigns
What are the 3 social cognition methods
Cognitive dissonance, health belief model, theory of planned behaviour
What do social cognition models look at
How do we decide to behave, look at thought processes, feeling and reasons
