10.7 The brain and our senses Flashcards
(11 cards)
Role of the brain?
The brain acts as a coordinator.
How does the brain act its role?
- INTEGRATES and INTERPRETS the signals received from different sense organs
- Produces sense
- Decides on what action
- Sends signals to muscles (through nerves) for RESPONSE
Reaction time?
The time between detecting a stimulus and making a response is the reaction time.
How many nerve cells in human brain?
10 billion nerve cells
How are signals sent through nerve cells?
Nerve cells have long extensions that connect to each other. Signals are sent from cell to cell through these extensions.
Cerebrum
Integrates and interprets (signals from sense organs)
Send signals (to muscles to make response)
Intelligence, memory, thinking
Cerebellum
Coordinates muscles (body movements)
Body balance
Medulla
Involuntary actions – basic life functions
» heartbeat, breathing, blood pressure
Why illusion?
Brain interprets signals incorrectly
Why does the tube look as if i goes through my hand?
Brain combines different images you see of right and left eye incorrectly.
Animated illusion?
See series of slightly different images
Brain combines these images
Interprets them as a moving picture
