Shortly after World War I, E. K. Strong, Jr., and some of his colleagues began to examine the activities that members of different professions liked and disliked. They came to realize that people in different professional groups had different patterns of interests. To some extent, one might expect this, because people tend to choose lines of work that interest them.

Critics cited a gender bias in the scales because different tests were used for men and women. Others complained about the lack of theory associated with the test.
