Piaget’s Model Flashcards

1
Q

What did Piaget believed in?

A

Piaget believed that children pass through distinct developmental stages in sequence. He though that children should be allowed to discover things for themselves through spontaneous play

Q

Stages of cognitive development

A

He suggested that a four year old cannot use abstract logic( abstract logical thinking) because they are not mature enough.
He observed that infants use egocentric thinking, they can only see the world in their own perspective.
He believed that the ability to think logically does not happen until the age of seven when children can use simple logic( concrete logical thinking) to solve problems

Q

Stages of cognitive development 1.2

A

Sensorimotor (birth-2 yrs): infants learn about their environment and develop early schemas by using all their senses to physically explore the world

Pre-operational( 2-7yrs): children begin to control their environment by using symbolic behaviour including representational words and drawing and pretend play but are yet not able to think logically

Concert operational (7-11yrs) : children use practical resources to help them to understand the world, such as counters for mathematics. The classify, categorise and use logic to understand things they see

Formal operations(11-18yrs): young people have the capacity for abstract thought rational though and problem solving

Q

Criticisms of Piaget ‘s stages

A

Some critics believe that Piaget underestimated children’s development and that with support they can move more quickly to the next stage of development.
He based his theory on observation of a small number of children
Some psychologists suggest that there’s a post formal operational stage where adults become more skilled in their ability that could be called wisdom
Other rewatch suggested that children take longer than 11 yrs to become skilled at abstract logical thinking. Cognitive dv not be part of maturation process depends of the child environment and the level of education

Q

Piaget’s schematic development theory

A

1 Assimilation: the child constructs an understanding of concept
2 Equilibrium: the child’s experience fits with their schema
3 Disequilibrium: a new experience disturbs the child’s schema
4 Accommodation: the child’s understanding changes to take account of the new experience

Q

How children think is Piaget terms ( Conservation)

A

Piaget test shows that children under 7 yrs old cannot conserve because they cannot think about more than one aspect of a situation at one time
By operational stage at 7 yrs old children can think logically so understand that is the quantity of water stays the same when poured into a differently shaped container

Q

Conservation

A

Refers for children’s understanding that the amount reminds the same even when the container’s shape has changed.
He also did this test by using solids, weight and number

Q

Egocentrism

A

Piaget believe that until children are 7 yrs old they can only see things from their own perspective. He used his Swiss mountain test to prove his theory of egocentrism

Q

Criticisms of Piaget about the egocentrism

A

Piaget underestimated children’s rate of development
Bruner did not agree Piaget’s notion or fixed stages and readiness to learn, he believes with adult support children can be helped to progress to high level thinking skills
He though that a indv ability to use final logical though depend on how much encouragement they have here over to think logically.
