What are norms?
Specific rules or expectations in a society about what is socially acceptable
Examples of norms
Behaviour in social areas (e.g.party,library)
What are moral codes
Code of ethics with the expectation that they will be followed
Examples of moral codes
Doctors and nurses code of ethics
What are values
Values are what society believe is the right thing to do within society
Examples of values
Protect innocence of children everyone is equal
What happens when values aren’t followed?
Everyone has different values and some may choose to not follow the dominant ones and so this can create deviance within society
What are the different forms of deviance
Deviant + good: acting in a way that doesn’t follow social norms t values but is admired (e.g. Jumping in front of a bus to save someone)
Deviant + odd: behaviour that challenges norms and values of how people do things but is not going against the law (e.g. Wearing shorts in winter)
Deviant +bad: acts of deviance that break the law and are viewed as undesirable by the majority of society (e.g. War, murder )
Evaluate deviant behaviour
Deviant behaviour can change and what acts are viewed as deviant due to changing social attitudes. What is viewed as deviant is a social construction
Informal sanctions
Informal sanctions are given by members of society for deviant behaviour
Examples of informal sanctions
A friend giving you a dirty look, school giving you a detention
Formal sanctions
Formal sanctions are given by the criminal justice system
Examples of formal sanctions
Fine given by the police, caution, imprisonement
