(16 cards)
What does MRS H GREN stand for?
Movement
Respiration
Sensitivity
Homeostasis
Growth
Reproduction
Excretion
Nutrition
How do plants get nutrition?
They use sunlight, carbon dioxide and water to produce oxygen and glucose. This is called photosynthesis
How do animals get nutrition?
They consume other living organisms to obtain the energy they require
What is respiration?
the biochemical process in which the cells of an organism obtain energy by combining oxygen and glucose, resulting in the release of carbon dioxide, water, and ATP
How does respiration work?
Energy is released by glucose either in presence of oxygen (aerobic) or without (anaerobic) , which produces water and carbon dioxide as waste products. The energy produced is called ATP
What is excretion?
The removal of toxic materials and substances from organisms
What do animals excrete?
Waste products excreted could include:
-Carbon dioxide from respiration
-Water from respiration
-Urea from the breakdown of proteins
What do plants excrete?
Waste products excreted could include:
-Oxygen from photosynthesis
-Water & Carbon Dioxide from respiration
What is sensitivity?
The organism’s ability to detect and respond to stimuli in its surroundings
What are the sensitivity responses in humans?
The nervous system
The endocrine system
What are the sensitivity responses in plants?
Geotropism
Phototropism
What is movement?
An action by an organism causing a change of position or place
What is homeostasis?
THe control or regulation of the internal conditions of a cell or organism
What are the key features of homeostasis in humans?
-Thermoregulation (Keeping the body at 37.0 degrees to maintain optimum enzyme activity)
-Glucoregulation (Maintaining blood glucose levels)
-Osmoregulation (Mainting body water levels)
What is reproduction?
The process that leads to the production of more of the same kind of organism
What is growth?
A permanent size increase
