1.2 Eukaryotic Organisms Flashcards
(12 cards)
What are the 4 eukaryotic organisms?
-Animals
-Plants
-Fungi
-Protocists
What are the basic features of eukaryotic organisms?
Multi or single celled
-Contains a nucleus, Cell wall & Membrane and Cytoplasm
What do typical animal cells contain?
-Has a nucleus with a distinct membrane
-Contains Ribosomes
- Cell membrane
-Mitochondria
-Cytoplasm
What are the features of animal cells?
- Multicellular
-Feed on organic substances made by other living beings - Store carbohydrates as glycogen
-Usually have nervous coordination
-Are able to move from one place to another
What do typical plant cells contain?
-Has a nucleus with a distinct membrane
-Cell wall & membrane
-Chloroplasts
-Vacuole
-Mitochondrion
What is the function of a cell wall in a plant cell?
-Made of cellulose
-Gives the cell more support
What is the function of a permanent vacuole in a plant cell?
-Contains cell sap (Made of sugars and salts dissovled in water)
- Used for storage
-Supports the shape of the cell
What is the function of chloroplasts in a plant cell?
-Contains chlorophyll pigments to absorb light energy, and the enzymes needed for photosynthesis
What do typical fungi cells contain?
-Nucleus
- Mitochondrion
-Cell wall (made of chitin)
-Cell membrane
-Ribosomes
-Cytoplasm
What are the key features of fungi cells?
-Moslty multicellular (Yeast is single celled)
- Made up of hyphae (contains many nuclei and forms a network known as mycellium)
- Feed by secreting extracellular digestive enzymes
-Stores carbohydrates as glycogen
-Do not have nervous coordination
What does a typical protocist cell contain?
-Cell membrane
-Nucleus
-Cytoplasm
-Vacuole
-Ribosomes
What are the key features of Protocist cells
-Mainly microscopic and single-celled
- Some animal-like features
-Some plant-like features e.g vacuole
-Some protocists can photosynthesize
-No nervous coordination
