What is wood seasoning?
The drying of wood to reduce the risk of warping
What are UV stabilisers?
Powder that is added to plastic to reduce discolouration from the sun.
What are fillers?
Make up plastic without having to use more material (reduces cost)
What is plasticising?
Can be added to plastic to make them easier to form.
What is annealing?
The slow heating of a metal to make it more malleable and softer to work with
What is hardening?
Metal is heated and then quickly quenched into oil or water. This makes its harder but more brittle.
What is tempering?
The metal is heated and allowed to dry freely in the air so as to allow more softness and make it less brittle. Often used alongside hardening.
what are the most common finishes for wood?
Oils/wax - applied with brush to keep out moisture
French Polish - applied with cotton wool
Wood stain - Stain wood other colour
Yacht varnish - waterproofing
What are the finishes for metal?
painting
dip coating
galvanising
electro plating
what is dip coating?
dipping metal into fluidised power to change colour and protect against corrosion.
What is painting (metal)
A cheap way of changing a metals colour. A primer will be required.
What is galvanising?
Dipping steel into a bath of liquid zinc to protect against corrosion.
What is electroplating?
Coats with thin layer of metal using electricity. Most commonly- zinc, nickel or tin (corrosion resistance).
