Q

Describe what you see and how this appearance differs from the normal renal histology

A

The most common carcinoma of the kidneys. Characterised by rows of uniform cells with (in routine histology) a clear empty looking cytoplasm.

The cytoplasm would be filled with lipid and glycogen which do not show up well on routine histology. The rows of clear cells are interspersed with a rich vascular network.
