Tooth morph Flashcards
1
Q
what are the features of the primary maxillary second molar
A
- The primary maxillary second molar has characteristics resembling those of the permanent maxillary first molar but it is smaller
- Has a prominent transverse ridge (maxillary permanent first molar also has a transverse ridge)
- Has two buccal roots and one palatal root
- Has a more bulbous cusp on the mesial side
- The C shaped fissure is more mesial
- Distal fissure runs onto the distal side
2
Q
what are the features of the mandibular second molar
A
- The 3 buccal cusps are morphologically similar to the lower first permanent molar
- Smallest cusp is the distal cusp (buccal)
- Largest cusp is the mesial cusp (buccal)
- Has 2 roots – splayed due to the tooth germ underneath
3
Q
what are the features of the primary central incisors
A
- Root may bend towards the distal but it does not always
- Mesial edge of the crown tends to be straighter
- The upper is more bulbous than the lower as the lower tends to be more triangular, smaller and thinner
- The palatal of the upper incisors may have a cingulum
- General morphology seems to be similar to that of the permanent – may find that the primary ones are a bit more worn down
4
Q
what are the features of the primary canines
A
- Mesial edge tends to be straighter with the distal flaring out soon after the ACJ
- If the tooth are worn down, look at the cross section as in the cross section canines tend to be more diamond shaped than the incisors
- The lowers are slimmer
5
Q
what are the features of the primary maxillary first molar
A
- There is a prominent mesiobuccal tubercle – can be so prominent that it looks like another cusp
- The crown shape is a bit more square than the other molars
- The fissure pattern is slightly S shaped
- Has 3 roots – 2 buccal 1 palatal
6
Q
what are the features of the primary mandibular first molar
A
- Mesiobuccal tubercle
* More oval shaped
