The executive summary is a concise summary of the designs, the reasons behind it and a summary of its effectiveness

The introduction describes the design problem and explains background details such as the context, client and possible customers

The conclusion describes the selected design, any problems and how they were resolved. The conclusion also evaluates how well the design met the criteria as well as any suitable tests and how the design could be improved to make it a success

Designers may also have to write up technical reports such as the results of practical tests, market research or product reviews. It is important the reports use the correct technical terms and can be illustrated with tables of data, graphs and charts

Orthographic projection is used to draw the font plan and end elevations of an object or building. They are drawn in a standardised way so they can be understood worldwide

Section drawing are used to show internal hidden details of an object where objects are cut in half along a cutting plane

Note: The technique gives a realistic ‘edge on’ view of products but a distorted view of rooms or buildings.

One-point perspective
Note: The technique gives a simplistic representation of rooms or buildings using a ‘face on’ view.

Thick/thin line technique is a technique used to make 3D drawings stand out by having the outer line bold and thick

Marker rendering is a technique used by designers to enhance their drawings by providing a base colour that can be added by additional colours or tones

Mixed media drawings make use of pencil, marker pen, watercolour and fine line pen to add realistic textures to drawings

Texture rendering can be added to drawings using a fine line pen, by adding different textures it can be made to look like specific materials
