Sound Waves Flashcards
How are sounds made?
• Sounds are caused by vibrations.
• The vibrations are passed on to air particles.
• The air particles bump into each other and the wave
progresses.
• Eventually the vibration is transferred to your ears and you
hear a sound.
What does volume mean?
• Volume is how loud or quiet something is.
• More energy in a vibration = a louder noise
• The loudness of a sound is measured in decibels (dB).
• The greater the amplitude (size) of the vibrations the greater
the volume.
What causes sound when a drum is hit?
The drum vibrates which causes the particles around the
drum to vibrate.
What type of wave is sound?
Logitudinal
What is the unit for loudness?
Decibel (Db)
Why can no-one hear you scream in space?
Sound needs a medium (a
substance) to travel through.
What frequency can you no longer hear above?
Ultrasound
What frequency can you no longer hear below?
Infrasound
Explain how the ear converts sound waves into electrical signals
Sound wave enters ear
→ Vibrations detected by ear drum
→ Vibrations passed through the ear bones
→ Vibrations causes fluid in the cochlea to move,
moving the hairs inside
→ The hairs cause an electrical impulse to be sent
along the auditory nerve
What does sound need to travel from one place to another?
Soudns needs a medium to travel through because something to pass on sound vibration
What is audible range?
Audible range means the range of sounds a personbcan hear
Who usuallu has the best audible range?
Dogs, bats, dolphins can hear much higher frequencies than humans
