Q

State 5 functions of water in the body

A
  • it helps regulate the body’s temperature (37°C) through sweat. Without this cooling system, we would become ill from heatstroke
  • helps the kidneys flush out harmful substances from our blood
  • kidneys filter waste products and eliminate them from the body as urine
  • transports nutrients, oxygen and carbon dioxide round the body
  • it is needed by nearly all body processes e.g. digestion, to remove waste products from the body as urine and faeces
  • water is found in all cells and tissues in our body
  • helps prevent the skin drying out and ensures that the lining of the digestive system and lungs are kept moist

Why would someone die from a shortage of water?

A

The blood gets thicker and is therefore more difficult to pump around the body, so the heart stops.
