What is ibuprofen?

A

Ibuprofen (200mg tablet) is a non-selective NSAID that inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins resulting in analgesic, antipyretic & anti-inflammatory actions.

Onset - 15 mins
Duration - 4 to 6 hours
Half-life - 2 hours

Metabolised by the liver and excreted by the kidneys.

Indications for ibuprofen?

A
  1. Moderate pain due to acute inflammation & tissue injury

Contraindications for ibuprofen?

A
  1. Allergy/ADR to any NSAID or aspirin
  2. Concurrent NSAID therapy
  3. Current GI bleeding or peptic ulcers
  4. Dehydration and or hypovolaemia
  5. Renal impairment
  6. NSAID induced asthma
  7. Heart failure
  8. Pregnancy
  9. Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) therapy
  10. Patients under 13 yrs or over 65 yrs
  11. Patients taking anticoagulant medications
  12. Diuretic treatment
