11.8 absolute temp and charles law. Flashcards
(9 cards)
what is the kelvin scale
a scale that is always pos (measures temperation)
–> why to ensure that you will never have negative pressure
(pressure and temp have a proportional relationship according to the gay lussex law)
if you have double the kevin does the pressure double?
yes because kelvin is an absolute scale, whereas when you double the temp the pressure is not doubled
doubling the kelvin = doubling the kinetic energy
what is absolute 0
-273.15 degrees celcius (which is 0 kelvin)
true or false. 1 k = 1 degrees c
true (kevin and ceclius has the same size unit division)
what is charles law?
temeprature and volumn are proprtional. as you heat a gas up the vilumn gets bigger
pressure and amount of mole (n) must remain constant
v1/t1 = v2/t2
what graph shows the charles law (axies)
volumn x temp graph (straight line slop, and data was extrapolated to get the absolute 0 temp)
how does charles law work at a molecular level?
temp increase = increase of kinetic energy
more inetic energy results in more collisions betweedn the entities and the walls of the container, therefore the container expands, resulting in more volumn.
what is aboslute temp?
the measurement of average kinetic energy of entities in a substance (unit symbol K)
what is the kelvin temperature scale?
a temperature scale that includes absolute 0 and same size unit divisions as the celsius temp scale
