12 mark essay Flashcards

A01 and A03 examples (4 cards)

1
Q

Case studies (give 4 examples of A01s with suitable A03s following them)

A

1st A01 : Case studies are in-depth studies that are often done over a long period of time to analyse changes in behaviour
1st A03 : This enables the researcher to follow the changes and development in the subject over time to learn more about the psychological issue
Makes results more reliable
Applicability is good as others can learn about their issues from this

2nd A01 : They take qualitative data which is often used for psychological analyses to find out new information rather than testing a theory.
2nd A03 : This is good for interpreting and making psychological analyses
Less reliability since the study is not easily replicable and could have varied results

3rd A01 : Case studies analyse an individual or a group to find out more about in-depth psychological issues of human behaviour, the subject(s) are usually informed that they are part of a study
3rd A03 : Has good ethics since informing them about the study gives them the opportunity to leave and protects them from harm
Cannot be generalised to the wider population as it is done on an unique individual and their experience

4th A01 : The qualitative data taken in case studies are interpreted by the researcher based on their view of the findings
4th A03 : This makes results biased to the researcher as they may use their own theories and interpretations which may be different from different perspectives

Other examples also accepted if they work

REMEMBER TO LINK A03s TO STUDIES DONE IN CLASS

Conclusion

A

A01 : Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of psychological ideas, processes, and procedures
In 12 markers, make sure to identify a fact about what is being asked to evaluate (case studies, field experiments, etc.)

A02 : Apply knowledge and understanding of psychological idea, processes and procedures
In 12 markers, apply the A01 based on the example given (how the A01 is being shown in the example)

A03 : Analyse and evaluate psychological information, ideas, processes and procedures
In 12 markers, give either a strength or a weakness about that A01 used in the study and how it affects the GRAVE aspects of the study. Make sure to link back to a study studied in class (key case studies) to link information to evaluate

Conclusion
Start with this means…, this suggests…, therefore….
Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses throughout the essay and which outweigh the other, giving a final opinion about that type of study (can talk about both but mainly focus on one)

Q

Using GRAVE to evaluate the study/experiment
+ Questions to show if it is a strength or a weakness of the study

These are used in A03s to evaluate a strength/weakness/both and to make the final opinion in the conclusion paragraph

A

Generalisability:
Can we generalise the results of the study?
Does it represent the wider population?
Consider the sample and target population

Reliability:
Can the study be replicated?
Was the procedure standardised?
Are the findings consistent?
Has the study been replicated?
Consider whether the same design, procedures, and measurements were used and if extraneous variables were controlled

Applicability:
Are the results relevant to everyday life/experiences?
Do the findings improve society?
Consider what value the researcher adds to everyday life

Validity:
Does the study measure what it meant to?
Natural setting to prove real-life behaviour?
Ecological validity?
Consider whether there is a clear relationship between the study and what it was intended to measure

Ethics:
Were the ethical guidelines followed?
Were participants at risk or physically/mentally harmed?
Were there consequences?
Socially acceptable?
Consider whether ethical principles were followed
