Who are the 5 main organisations within the CJS?
Police, CPS, Courts, HMP Service + NPS.
What is the role of the Police?
Role is to investigate crime, collect evidence, make arrests, detains and question suspects and then give information to CPS
What is the Police’s relationship with the CPS + Courts
- Relationship with the courts – give evidence as the prosecutions witness, provide witness support + hold and transfer defendants
- Relationship with CPS – provide evidence for the prosecution + charge suspects
What is the Police’s relationship like with the Prison + Probation services?
HM Prison + Probation Service – arrest + return those to prison for breaching terms + Sarahs Law as they co-operate with sex offenders in areas
What is the role of the CPS?
They advise police on the investigation, access evidence, carries out a full code test + prepares and presents the prosecution
What is the CPS relationship with the police + Courts?
- Relationship with police – advise on lines of enquiry + build the case
- Relationship with courts – presents the prosecution in court
What is the role of the HM Courts + Tribunals?
After a suspect is charged, they are put before a court (magistrate or crown), if they plead guilty sentencing follows but if an if not guilty a trial is prepared, the verdict is decided by the jury or magistrate.
What is the Courts relationship with the HM Prison + Probation service?
Relationship with prisons – holds defendants attending court, pending their return + transfer to prison
What is the role of the HM Prison + Probation services?
Prison services carry out sentences given by court; the probation service supervise those serving sentences in the community + help rehabilitate offenders
Probation service relationship with prison service?
Probation service relationship with prison service – supervises prisoners released on licence
Probation service relationship with courts?
Probation service relationship with courts – prepares sentence reports, supervises offenders given community sentences + drug testing
Relationship prisons have with courts?
Relationship prisons have with courts – carry out custodial sentences court give + defendants on remand
Relationship prisons have with the police
Relationship prisons have with the police – facilitate interviews involved in ongoing investigations (snitches)
