Other explorers sailed around Africa to the Indies. Columbus sailed west to to find the new route and landed in the Bahamas, not the Indies.

The Spanish brought diseases that killed many Native Americans. They also defeated the largest North American empires in Mexico and South America.

New Spain
Describe life in New Spain.
Spanish colonial cities had all of the features of cities in Spain. The colonists were divided into groups by cultures and wealth, with Spaniards from Spain at the top, and Native Americans and enslaved Africans at the bottom
What was life like for the Natives in New Spain?
Spanish colonists in New Spain made life difficult for the Native Americans by forcing them to work on the encomienda by taking away their rights and lands, and by treating them inferior to Spanish Colonists.
Encomienda
A very large piece of land in New Spain given to the Spanish government to certain Spanish colonists during the 1500’s.
Even though the King lived across the Atlantic Ocean, he tried to rule New Spain. In what ways did he do this?
He set up the encomienda system and allowed the people who lived in New Spain to force Native Americans to work the land.

A person who teaches his or her religion to those who have different beliefs

A person of mixed Spanish and Indian heritage
