what is the aetiology of bell’s palsy ?

A

idiopathic
different theories: vascular ischaemic theory
viral theeory
auto immune theory

what is the clinical picture of bell’s palsy ?

A

facial paralysis
retroauricular pain a few hours before onset
hyperacusis
decreased tearing
normal ear eexamination
metallic taste in mouth

what investigations are required foer thee diagnosis of facial palsy ?

A

not required itts a clinical diagnosis
if it is prolonged : electrodiagnostic test can be used
MRI may be needed to exclude facial nerve neuroma

what is the treatment for bell’s palsy ?

A

systemic steroids ( prednisolone 1mg/kg/ day with tapering for 2 weeks )
vasodilators
antivirals
eye care
surgical intervention may be needed for facial nerve decompression
