Presidential reconstruction

A

Andrew Johnson- New president from Tennessee
• He forced Confederate leaders to grovel; He made them write apology letters; he wanted people to beg for forgiveness.
• Southern governments installed by the Fall of 1865
• He started off poor, so he didn’t like the plantation owners who had all the money.
• He also didn’t like slaves though
• Mean guy

A

Radical Republicans (formal abolitionists)
• Claimed South was ignoring the 13th amendment
• From the investigation they conducted, they found that the former confederate states had all the former Confederate leaders in power;
they acted like abolition never happened.
• Black Codes
• Same rules as the Slave Codes;
o Just a different name
• Former confederates in Power o Military Reconstruction Act, 1867
•I Swept away southern state governments
• No Alabama, Tennessee, or any other confederal states
- 5 military districts
they divided these states into 5 military districts with a military leader in charge
• Martial Law: ruled by the military
• New state constitutional conventions
• Forced the former states to hold a state convention eradicating the black codes and giving African Americans equal rights

Compromise of 1877

A

Southerner Democratic leaders met with Haize and made a deal with him
• that northerners were sick of reconstruction. Republicans want the presidency.
Southern democrats want troops out of the south and the end of reconstruction
• Haize agrees, and by 1877, all the troops are out of the SOuth. Reconstruction is
now over
• The south now develops a different social and economic system. Jim crow laws, separate but equal. Segregation begins.

The conspiracy

A

In April of 1865, Abraham Lincoln got shot.
A group of white southerners botched every plan but Lincoln. The ringleader was John Wikes Booth.
• The conspiracy was executed. Some northerners just wanted to punish the South.
• Some in the North wanted to change the sound to help former slaves
• South motivation freed slaves to want freedom, and slave owners to don’t
