1.24 Explain the formation of ions in ionic compounds from their atoms, limited to compounds of elements in groups 1, 2, 6 and 7 Flashcards
(6 cards)
What electronic structure do ions produced by metals in Groups 1 and 2 and nonmetals in Groups 6 and 7 have?
They have the electronic structure of a noble gas (Group 0).
What type of ions do Group 1 metals form?
Group 1 metals will lose 1 electron and form +1 ions.
What type of ions do Group 2 metals form?
Group 2 metals will lose 2 electrons and form +2 ions.
What type of ions do Group 6 nonmetals form?
Group 6 nonmetals will gain 2 electrons and form 2- ions.
What type of ions do Group 7 nonmetals form?
Group 7 nonmetals will gain 1 electron and form 1- ions.
What is the overall charge of a compound?
A compound will have an overall charge of 0, so you need to balance out the + and - charges.
