Muscle Attachments
Quadratus Lumborum
O - Iliac crest, iliolumbar ligament, and thoracolumbar fascia
I - Transverse processes of L1-L4 and low margin of 12th rib
Diaphragm
O - Inferior & internal surface of rib cage and sternum (costal margin/angle), and costal cartilage of last 6 ribs, and from lumbar vertebral bodies + intervertebral discs L1-L3/L4 (larger right crus) and L1-L2/L3 (smaller left crus) + region’s anterior longitudinal ligament
I - Central tendon
Rectus Abdominis
O - Pubic crest, and pubic symphysis
I - Xiphoid process, and 5th-7th costal cartilages
External Oblique
O - Outer surfaces of 5th-12th ribs
I - Most fibers: linea alba; some fibers insert into pubic crest & tubercle, and anterior part of iliac crest
Internal Oblique
O - Thoracolumbar fascia, anterior two-thirds of iliac crest, and connective tissue deep to lateral-third of inguinal ligament
I - Linea alba, pectineal line via conjoint tendon, and 10th-12th ribs
Transversus Abdominis
O - Inguinal ligament, thoracolumbar fascia, cartilages of 7th-12ribs, iliac crest, and connective tissue deep to lateral-third of inguinal ligament
I - linea alba, pubic crest, and pectineal line of pubis via conjoint tendon
Serratus Posterior Superior
O - Nuchal ligament, and spinous processes of C7-T3
I - Superior borders of ribs 2-4
Serratus Posterior Inferior
O - Spinous processes of T11-L2
I - Inferior border of ribs 8-12 near their angles
Levator Costarum
O - Transverse processes of T7-T11
I - Subjacent ribs between tubercle and angle
Subcostal
O - Internal surface of lower ribs, near their angles
I - Superior borders of 2nd or 3rd rib below
Transversus Thoracis
O - Posterior surface of lower sternum
I - Internal surface of costal cartilages 2-6
External Intercostals
O - Inferior border of ribs
I - Superior border of ribs below
(Forced inspiration; Raises ribs)
Internal Intercostals
O - Inferior border of ribs
I- Superior border of ribs below
(Depresses ribs)
