Redden research (2008) into Detail theory

A

-135 p.p.
-Each given 22 jelly beans one at a time
-Group 1 given general info on a computer e.g: ‘bean no. 7’
-group 2 given specific info on computer e.g: cherry flavour bean no. 8’

Found:
-Group one grew bored more quickly
-Group 2 enjoyed the task more
-Suggests detail leads to enjoyment

The role of Denial in diets Overview

A

-Attempting to supress or deny a thought has the opposite effect- more prominent
-Wegner (1994) refers to this phenomenon as the ‘theory of ironic processes of mental control’.
-It represents a paradoxical effect of thought control (ie denial backfires)
-As soon as you deny food, It simultaneously becomes more attractive

Wegner et al research

A

Wegner et al (1987) asked some p.p not to think about a white bear, but to ring a bell if they did.
-Told others TO think of a white bear
FOUND those told NOT to think of the bear rang their bells far more often
