What happened at Munich Putsch?
8th November 1923: Hitler fired a bullet into the ceiling and announced that he’s taking over Bavaria.
He stated that he’d march to Berlin and take over the entire country.
Around Munich, Hitler’s stormtroopers took control of government buildings and arrested officials.
Kaht promised to help him and was released - but he contacted the police.
This meant that when Hitler and 2,000 supporters began their march, they were met by armed police.
What were the consequences of the Munich Putsch?
3 policemen and 16 Nazis dead after a short gun battle.
Hitler (wounded) and Ludendorff were imprisoned and put on trial for treason.
Hitler’s trial lasted 24 days. Ludendorff was set free and Hitler was sent to prison for 5 years.
- Others would have been executed, but the judges supported his view against the Weimar Republic.
- In prison, he wrote Mein Kampf (My Struggle), a life story and his political views.
- He was released in December 1924, after serving 9 months. The failure taught Hitler that he had to win votes like any other political party.
His imprisonment captured the publics attention and the Nazis were now recognised as the leading Anti-Republic vote.
