1.3 Cell Division Flashcards
What is mitosis?
A type of cell division that results in two genetically identical daughter cells
What is the purpose of mitosis?
To enable growth, repair, and asexual reproduction in organisms
What is meiosis?
A type of cell division that results in four non-identical daughter cells, each with half the original number of chromosomes
What is the purpose of meiosis?
To produce gametes (sperm and egg cells) for sexual reproduction
What happens during prophase in mitosis?
The chromosomes condense, and the nuclear membrane breaks down
What happens during metaphase in mitosis?
The chromosomes line up at the equator of the cell
What happens during anaphase in mitosis?
The chromatids are pulled to opposite poles of the cell
What happens during telophase in mitosis?
The nuclear membrane reforms around each set of chromosomes
What is cytokinesis?
The final stage of cell division where the cytoplasm splits, creating two daughter cells
