1.3 - Types of Computer Systems Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is a computer system?
A combination of both hardware and software
Name 6 computer systems
Desktop, Laptop, Smartphone, Tablet, Hybrid Device (tablet with keyboard), and a Server
What are two pros and two cons to a desktop?
A desktop often has a more powerful processor (CPU) compared to other computer systems and once plugged into a power source it won’t run out of charge.
However its absence of a battery means it’s not portable and it requires more dedicated physical space to operate
What are two pros and two cons to a laptop?
A laptop is relatively portable and doesn’t require all too much dedicated space to operate. However a laptop can be stolen with relative ease if not tightly guarded and it’s battery will run out if not hooked up to a power source
What are two pros and two cons of a smartphone?
A smartphone is as portable as it gets, computer systems wise, and can consequently be used on the go if necessary. However, they can be easily stolen and the interface is quite small for a computer system
What are two pros and two cons of a tablet?
Tablets are portable and their interface is about as big as it can be whilst still being able to be used on the go. However it can easily be stolen the interface is still relatively small
What are two pros and two cons of a hybrid device (tablet with a keyboard)?
Combine the best of laptops and tablets into one whilst remaining portable. However still can be easily stolen and the battery will die without being hooked up to a power sauce
What does a server do?
A powerful computer that provides service to other computers over a network
How does a quantum computer differ to other computer systems?
They use qubits opposed to standard binary logic
What is one advantage and one disadvantage to quantum computers?
They massively speed up processing but are harder to control and manufacture
What is a mainframe?
Large, powerful computers used for large-scale tasks
What is one advantage and one disadvantage to mainframes?
They are extremely reliable but due to their complexity it requires a team of technicians
What is an embedded system?
Computers within a wider system that perform a dedicated job
