13
Q

What causes a complete mole

A

Two sperm cells fertilise ovumnt hat contains no genetic material
Sperm combine genetic material and cells start to divide and grow into complete mole - no foetal material forms

Q

What causes a partial mole

A

3 SPERM CELLS fertolose normal ovum containing genetic materal at same time
3 sets of chromosomes - haploid cell
cell divides and multiplies - some foetal material may form

Q

What indicates a molar pregnancy over a normal pregnancy

A

More severe morning sickness
Vaginal bleeding
Increased enlargement of uterus
Abnormally high hCG
Thyrotoxicosis (hCG can mimic TSH and stimulate thyroid to produce excess T3 + T4)

A

Evacuation of uterus to remove mole
Specialist centres for management and follow up
hCG levels monitored til return to normal

Treatment of hydatidiform mole

A

Removed with small operation
Small tube passed into womb
