She decorates the closet a bit to make it more comfortable, filling it with books and covering up a mirror on the wall with an inspiring poster of Maya Angelou.

Maya is one of the greatest American writers. She is known for speaking our about her personal sexual assault, which Melinda can relate to. One of her books got banned by the school board which Melinda thought was cool because even the school board is afraid of her. She sees this poster as empowering and it inspires her to speak up about her trauma.

On thanksgiving Melinda’s dad created a disgusting turkey soup, so they ordered pizza instead. Melinda thinks the turkey was a waste for a lousy dinner, and she wanted to commemorate it by creating art with the bones. She glues the bones together, used knifes as legs, and a barbie-doll head in the center. The artwork she creates becomes a representation of her emotional state from her trauma. She compares the bare bones to herself; striped away of her innocence and dignity. Ivy thinks its scary in a weird way, and that Melinda did a good job. Mr. Freeman things its excellent and represents pain.
