Q

what is a coup injury in respect to brain injuries?

16
Q

Name 5 primary injuries during TBI?

A

-skull fracture
-contusions
-haemorrhage
-haematoma
-diffused axonal injury
-concussion

17
Q

Name 5 secondary injuries that can occur during TBI?

A

-brain swelling
-increased intracranial pressure
-intracranial haemorrhage
-epilepsy
-Hypoxies
all lead to atrophy of the brain tissue and wider symptoms.`

18
Q

how do you work out cerebral perfusion pressure?

A

Cerebral prefusion presure= mean aterial pressure- intracranial pressure.

19
Q

what is the monroe kellie doctrine?

A

intracranial volume= brain volume+ blood volume+ cerebrospinal fluid volume.

20
Q

what are the intrcranial components?

A

Brain,blood and cerebro spinal fluid.

21
Q

what are the intrcranial components?

A

Brain,blood and cerebro spinal fluid.

22
Q

What treatments are there for traumatic brain injuries?

A

-medically induced coma
-brain diuretic
-palcemetn of a shunt to release pressure
-cranieoctomy (partial skull removal)

23
Q

name two types of secondary brain injuries?

A

-neurochemical injury
-neuro-inflammation

24
Q

What are neurochemical injuries?

A

-excessive production of free radicals
-excessive release of excitatory neurotransmitters
-alterations in glucose metabolism
-decreased cerebral inflammation.

25
Q

what are examples of late/delayed brain injuries?

A

-white matter degeneration
-post-traumatic hydrocephalus
-post traumatic seizures

26
Q

what are neuroinflammatory injuries?

A

-activation of microglia, astrocyte and neurons
-activation and recruitment of macrophages
-Microglia secrete proinflamatory modulators to degrade BBB release cytokines

27
Q

what is diffusal axonal injury (DAI)?

A

BAPP produced by neurons in response to injury, accumulates at points of damage froms swellings many axons ahve multiple swellings.

28
Q

what is chronic traumatic Encephalopathy?

A

CTE is a progressiev and degenerating disorder that has been linked to repeated head injuries and repeated concussions.

29
Q

What are the symptoms of chronic traumatic encephalopathy?

A

Memory loss, confusion, impaired judgement, aggression, depression and parkinsons.
