7 - ANAEROBIC RESPIRATION Flashcards

1
Q

What is the difference between anaerobic and aerobic respiration?

A

Anaerobic respiration doesn’t use oxygen, and therefore doesn’t involve the link reaction, Krebs cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation.

Q

What is the one type of anaerobic respiration that we need to know about and where does it occur?

Q

How does it work?

A

1) Glucose if converted to pyruvate via glycolysis
2) Reduced NAD (from glycolysis) transfers hydrogen to pyruvate to from lactate and NAD (reused in glycolysis)

Q

What does the production of lactate regenerate and what does this mean?

A

NAD, meaning that glycolysis can continue (even if there isn’t much oxygen), so a small amount of ATP can be produced

Q

How is the lactic acid broken down (what are the two ways)?

A

1) Cells convert the lactic acid back to pyruvate (which then re-enters aerobic respiration at the Krebs cycle)
2) Liver cells can convert the lactic acid back to glucose (which can be respired or stored)
